Smart TV (IPTV) programs which are broadcasted over wireless Internet networks to major home TVs are already available in high definition, the Lithuanian Radio and Television Center (Telecentras) announced such innovation today.
Back in December 2016, Telecentras was the first in Lithuania and one of the first in the world to launch broadcasting smart TV programs to home TVs over the 4G LTE mobile network. From today some programs are starting to be sent in HD qality.
“All mobile operators in the country announce they streamTV and video content over 4G networks, but it must be understood that these data are mostly sent to small screens on smartphones and tablets. A rare operator is committed to delivering TV programs to the big-screen TVs, as this is a technological challenge that requires significant network resources, ”says Egidijus Ropė, Chief Technology Officer at the company. “We are better prepared in this respect: the high-bandwidth Telecentras network and the application of state-of-the-art data processing technology enable us to bring smart TV services to households that have so far been” bitten “by fixed-line technology.”
The IPTV HD solution developed by Telecentras is based on HEVC video encoding algorithms, which provide better picture quality when sending TV programs to home TVs in HD resolution.
Almost all of the most watched TV channels in Lithuania are re-broadcast in high definition via MEZON smart TV. In the Mini package of 12 TV channels 11 are re-transmitted in HD, while in the Optimum HD package more than 1/3 channels are re-transmitted in HD quality.
Smart TV or IPTV – because of the ability to control TV program recordings: rewind, fast forward, stop and so watch movies, shows, sports and other TV content at any convenient time – is currently the fastest growing pay-TV in Lithuania. Today it is used by over 270 thousand customers.
