Telecentras: radio started with engineers and still relies on their work

press release

Celebrating its 100th anniversary since the first radio broadcasts from Kaunas Radiophone in 1926, Telecentras congratulates the veterans of radio engineering, as well as all technical staff of current radio stations and transmission networks, without whom the radio’s daily activities could not function as a means of public information.

“Invisible, but necessary” – this is the title of a recently published book by historian Valdas Selenis about the activities of radio engineers and communication personnel during the 1991 Soviet military aggression. I believe this phrase is fitting to describe the mission of radio engineers and their role in the entire history of radio, including today’s context,” says Telecentras director Remigijus Šeris. “Without radio engineers, radio in Lithuania would neither have existed in 1926 nor would it function today.”

Today in Lithuania, about 60 radio programs are transmitted over the FM radio frequency band, with an average of around 1.5 million listeners listened to daily. listeners. About 70 percent of all FM transmitters operating in the country run based on the Telecentras infrastructure. This infrastructure is designed to ensure reliable and stable operation of radio program transmission networks: backup power, fiber optic access, regular equipment maintenance, and fault repairs.

Radio has continuously evolved throughout its history both as a medium and as a technology. “Our engineers are already looking to the future, where analog FM radio should be supplemented by digital transmission technologies such as the digital radio DAB+,” says the head of Telecentras.
